FOXBOROUGH, Mass. - The New England Patriots let Knowshon Moreno run for 134 yards in their season opener. Now they must face Adrian Peterson. Scary? "You know what? I love it," defensive tackle Sealver Siliga said Wednesday. "This is going to be a good test and I think our teams real excited." One week after Moreno led the Miami Dolphins 191-yard rushing attack in a 33-20 win over New England, the Patriots visit Peterson and the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday. "First-game jitters or whatever you want to call it," Patriots linebacker Donta Hightower said. "For us to want to be a great defence, which is something that all of us agreed we wanted to do, you definitely cant allow the offence to run the ball the way they did." The Patriots also had trouble stopping Lamar Miller, who rushed for 59 yards. Now theyre preparing for another one-two punch of Peterson and wide receiver Cordarrelle Patterson. Peterson rushed 21 times for 75 yards in last Sundays 34-6 win over the St. Louis Rams after finishing second in the NFL last season with 90.4 yards rushing per game. Patterson ran three times for 102 yards, including a 67-yard touchdown. "Hes definitely a tremendous athlete," Hightower said of Patterson. "You dont see many guys who can do that, come out and play receiver and then actually line up in the backfield and run the ball like a running back." But Peterson is the most dangerous threat to a New England run defence that was weak last season — better than just two teams — and got off to a bad start despite the return of defensive tackle Vince Wilfork and linebacker Jared Mayo from injuries that sidelined them most of last season. Mayo led the Patriots with 12 tackles against Miami, but Wilfork had just two and Hightower was limited to just one unassisted tackle. "We were really disappointed but (its) a new week, a new game," said Siliga, who had six tackles. "All we can do is look forward and learn from what happened and get ready for the Vikings because thats going to be a tough job." The burden will be on the defensive line to wrap Peterson up and not let him get to the linebackers level. Once there, hes liable to take off on another long run. He has 15 runs of 58 yards or more in his seven seasons before this year. Hes run for touchdowns of 64 yards or more in six of those seven seasons. And hes rushed for at least 10 touchdowns every year. "Hes big. Hes fast. Hes strong. Hes smart. He has great vision," Hightower said. "He has everything in a running back that youd want. Its going to take all of our guys being at the point of attack and everybody getting to the ball, so hes not getting that one-on-one matchup to break that tackle and get those extra yards." If Peterson is contained, New England still must contend with new offensive co-ordinator Norv Turners system with Matt Cassel throwing against his former team. Cassel expects the Patriots defence to rebound from their poor performance against the Dolphins. "They always make adjustments and then come back even stronger after a loss," he said. "Im sure there will be changes that they make in terms of scheme and everything else to get it figured out." That still may not be enough to keep the powerful, shifty Peterson from running through their defence. "A guy that big, you wouldnt expect him to be able to hit those cuts and those jump cuts that he does," Hightower said. "But thats something that hes very good at and definitely one of the reasons why hes one of the better backs in the league." Siliga was sidelined for much of the preseason and played against Miami with a heavy wrap on his injured left hand as a precaution. He could be wearing it again Sunday when he tries to tackle Peterson. "Hes hard enough back to take down with two hands, let alone one," Siliga said, "but Im up for the challenge." ___ Online: AP NFL website: and Tramon Williams Packers Jersey . Pedroia reached the milestone with a little panache, hitting a grand slam in the sixth inning and propelling the Boston Red Sox to a 7-1 win over the Oakland Athletics on Friday night.CLEVELAND -- Before touching home plate, Mike Aviles slowed down long enough to get splashed in the face with cold water by his teammates. Maybe the Indians are waking up just in time. Aviles homered leading off the 11th inning Friday night to give Cleveland a 2-1 win over the Baltimore Orioles. Aviles, who made two barehanded plays at third base earlier in the game, connected on a 1-2 pitch from Brian Matusz (2-3), driving it onto the home run porch in left field for just Clevelands second run in the past 22-plus innings. The Indians were shut out 1-0 by Arizona in 12 innings on Wednesday night. After rounding third, Aviles was doused by his jubilant teammates, who then embraced him and danced as one up the first-base line. "That would have been a tough one to lose," Indians manager Terry Francona said. The Indians ninth walk-off win -- and second in three games -- allowed them to keep their playoff push going and not waste another strong outing from Corey Kluber, who allowed just one run in 7 2-3 innings and remained unbeaten in eight starts since June. Scott Atchison (6-0) retired all six batters. Kluber struck out 10 and has allowed just four runs in 47 2-3 innings over six second-half starts. He has a 0.76 ERA since July 6. The stoic Kluber, nicknamed "Klubot" by for his passive demeanour, walked one. "Hes so good and he competes," Francona said. "Hes just worked himself into being one of the premier pitchers in baseball. He wants to be the best." Rookie Zach Walters homered off Baltimore starter Wei-Yin Chen as the Indians won for the fourth time in five games. Blanked until the eighth by Kluber, the Orioles tied it on J.J. Hardys two-out single. After Kluber got two outs, Nelson Cruz singled off the right-hander, who has been on a remarkable run during the seasons second half. Kluber received a standing ovation from Clevelands fans as he walked to the dugout, and he had barely taken a seat when the Orioles evened it against Bryan Shaw. Delmon Young singled and Hardy, who missed the previous four games with a sprained left thumb, also singled,, with Cruz scoring ahead of centre fielder Michael Brantleys throw to the plate.dddddddddddd Klubers eight double-digit strikeout games this season are the most for an Indians pitcher since Hall of Famer Dennis Eckersley in 1976. Walters gave the Indians a 1-0 lead with a homer in the fifth off Chen, who allowed only four hits in seven innings. During his brilliant second-half stretch, Kluber has struck out 55 in less than 48 innings, outdueled Seattle ace Felix Hernandez, downed the Tigers and Yankees and carried a perfect game into the seventh at Kansas City on July 24 before getting a no-decision. Kluber hasnt lost since June 30, and that was a 1-0 setback against the Dodgers. GAMESMANSHIP Francona wasnt pleased with how the umpires handled Baltimore manager Buck Showalter contesting that Orioles centre fielder Adam Jones was hit by a pitch in the eighth. Francona felt the delay -- Jones squared to bunt and appeared to get hit in the hand -- may have affected Kluber. After looking at a replay, the umpires determined Jones offered at the pitch. THIS BUDS FOR YOU: Francona had high praise for baseball commissioner Bud Selig, who will be replaced in January by Rob Manfred. Francona has gotten to know Selig over the years and credited him with steering the game through "some tumultuous times." "I cant imagine trying to please 30 owners and 30 teams," Francona said, "especially the way baseball is set up." TRAINERS ROOM Orioles: 3B Manny Machado (sprained right knee) is travelling with the team, but theres no timetable for when his return. Indians: 1B Nick Swisher will have his right knee examined again on Tuesday in Los Angeles. Its possible hell need season-ending surgery, and Swishers injury could explain his lack of production in his second season with Cleveland. UP NEXT Former Indians RHP Ubaldo Jimenez (4-Cool faces his ex-teammates for the second time this season. Jimenez went 13-9 for Cleveland last season before signing with Baltimore as a free agent. Hell face RHP Carlos Carrasco (4-4), making his second start since returning to Clevelands rotation.
